Biography
I became involved in counseling out of my ongoing recovery process. As a recovering alcoholic, I had been going through the 12 steps of AA, attending meetings, had sponsors and sponsees for several years, when i decided to change careers, and look into AOD counseling. I attended the UC Berkeley Extension program for substance abuse counseling, and I soon discovered I was much drawn to studying the issues underlying and attending substance abuse and their manifestation in all people, not only those with SUDs. I wrote my masters thesis/lit review at CSUEB on treating the dually diagnosed homeless, and I have been working with that population for 17 years. The longer I have worked with the homeless, the more I have come to focus on trauma, PTSD and Complex P, as I come to realize its sweeping presence among those who have become lost and powerless in our society. I use techniques associated with CBT, DBT, MI, and mindfulness, and I am preparing to take EMDR trainings and become certified in that practice. I am seeking to become a sole practitioner offering remote therapy, and I hope to learn from other practitioners and CAMFT the various ways to initiate and excel in a private practice.
