Description:

This workshop equips participants with proven strategies to effectively engage and support older adults—and, when needed, their family members—using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) adapted to their unique needs. Older adults often face challenges such as vision and hearing impairments, cognitive decline, chronic medical conditions, functional limitations, and limited social support. These factors can hinder their ability to fully benefit from traditional CBT approaches. In this training, you'll learn how to identify these barriers and implement tailored accommodations, ensuring your therapeutic interventions are both practical and impactful.

Learning Objectives:

By the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Describe three accommodations that make CBT more effective with older adults

2. List the key elements of a successful behavioral activation program for an older

adult suffering from depression

4. Compare the termination process with an older adult vs. younger or middle aged

5. List three things a therapist should do in order to make the best use of home

practice assignments

Presenter Bio:

Dolores Gallagher-Thompson earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern California in 1979 and has been a licensed psychologist in California since 1981. Dr. Gallagher-Thompson trained with Aaron Beck, MD, at the Cognitive Therapy Institute in Philadelphia, PA (the founder of cognitive therapy), and with Peter Lewinsohn, PhD, at the University of Oregon, who specialized in behavioral approaches. These formative experiences led to the development of “CBT for Later Life Depression,” a therapeutic approach she co-created with her husband, Larry W. Thompson, PhD, ABPP. Together, they provided clinical care, conducted research, and led several randomized clinical trials on this evidence-based therapy, which has since been widely adopted by clinicians in various settings.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Gallagher-Thompson and Dr. Thompson trained psychology interns and post-doctoral students, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and psychiatry residents and fellows at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Gallagher-Thompson continues to train psychiatrists in this approach today. Board-certified in both Clinical Psychology and Geropsychology, she was part of the original team that established the geropsychology specialization through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). She also serves as an oral examiner for the ABPP and recently revised the ethics vignettes used in oral exams to ensure comprehensive representation of diversity issues.

Currently, Dr. Gallagher-Thompson holds the title of Professor Emerita in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
